Western Plains Animal Refuge, Inc was begun in 2006 by Dr. Jessica Braun and her husband Curt Braun to help meet the needs of homeless and injured animals in Western Kansas.  With the number of licensed wildlife rehabilitators diminished by almost 75% in 2006, and no forseeable changes in humane society euthanasia rates, something had to be done.  Thus, the Refuge began.

We accept all species of wildlife from snakes and turtles to deer to birds of prey for rehabilitation.  Wild animals brought to us receive medical treatment and care (sometimes very extended length care) for as long as it takes for them to be releasable into the wild, or transferred to an appropriate education facility or zoo.

Domestic animals are also accepted at the refuge.  They are provided with emergency and preventative health care and testing, spaying or neutering and lots of love and attention until an appropriate home can be found.  We also work with many rescue organizations across the country which increases an animal's chance of finding a forever home.

We are a non-profit organization and are funded by donations which are tax deductible.  Our organization is run by volunteers only, so all money donated goes directly to provide food and medical care for the animals.  We are strong advocates for spaying and neutering all pets.

We keep animals as long as it takes to find them a home, and do not euthanize any, other than the occassional animal that is not medically treatable.  Because of this, and the fact that we are very limited on space, we are selective in the animals we accept, and do sometimes have a waiting list.  We cannot accept animals that are aggressive with other animals or people.
