Your cat's health depends on the quality of wellness care he/she receives from birth to the senior years. We work with you on all aspects of wellness care from diet to vaccinations, to therapeutic testing. Below is a brief outline of our health recommendations for cats based on age. Your pet's schedule may differ depending on age and health status.
At 6 weeks of age your kitten needs: 1. Complete physical examination
2. Intestinal parasite screen and possible deworming
3. Proper socialization and litter box training
At 9-10 weeks of age your kitten needs:
1. Complete physical examination
2. Testing for leukemia and fiv
3. fvrcp vaccination (upper respiratory viruses and panleukopenia which causes diarrhea), and bordatella (upper respiratory)
4. First vaccines for leukemia and fiv if test negative and going to go outside (we only vaccinate cats that will have exposure, ie cats that go outside, for these two diseases)
5. First dose of heartworm prevention +/- external parasite protection
At 13-14 weeks of age your kitten needs: 1. Complete physical examination
2. All vaccines given at 9 weeks except bordatella
3. First rabies vaccination
4. Second and final leukemia vaccination and second fiv vaccination
5. Second dose of heartworm prevention +/- external parasite protection
At 15-16 weeks of age your kitten needs: 1. Preanesthetic blood work testing internal organ function, white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets.
2. Spay or neuter and declaw if necessary
At 17-18 weeks of age your kitten needs: 1. Last fiv booster
2. Third dose of heartworm prevention +/- external parasite protection
At 21-22 weeks of age your kitten needs:
1. Fourth dose of heartworm prevention (continue monthly throughout lifetime)
2. Switch from kitten food to adult food (mixing old and new for 3-5 days)
At 12-15 months of age your cat needs: 1. Complete physical examination
2. Booster vaccinations for fvrcp, bordatella, rabies, and leukemia/fiv (if going outside)
3. Intestinal parasite screen (unless NEVER goes outside and is not exposed to other animals)
4. Monthly heartworm prevention +/- external parasite control
From 2-7 years of age your cat needs: 1. Yearly physical examinations
2. Yearly intestinal parasite screens (see above)
3. Yearly booster vaccine for bordatella, leukemia, and fiv
4. Boosters every 3 years for fvrcp and rabies
5. Monthly heartworm prevention and external parasite protection as needed
6. Regular dental cleanings as well as brushing and sealant application at home
From age 7 and older your cat needs: 1. Semi-annual examinations including blood pressure measurements
2. Yearly intestinal parasite screens
3. Yearly boosters for bordatella, leukemia, and fiv
4. Boosters every 3 years for fvrcp and rabies as health permits
5. Regular dental cleanings and home care
6. Yearly testing including blood chemistries, CBC, thyroid and urinalysis to catch diseases early when they are most treatable
7. Heartworm prevention monthly +/- external parasite control
